Cover Song Spotlight: “I’m On Fire”

“I’m On Fire” was written by the boss, Bruce Springsteen, and was released on his legendary album Born In The U.S.A. in 1985. The song peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has since been covered and copied plenty of times. Today, we took a listen through a lot of those covers. We wanted to find the best one. Who took the song to another level? Who made the song even better than the original? Who filled the song with more emotion?

UnknownOne version of “I’m On Fire” that really tickled our ears is the Chromatics version. It was released on their In The City EP (2010) under the indie-label “Italians Do It Better.” In the original track Bruce Springsteen used synthesizers do enhance the track, perhaps make it more mysterious. They are mostly in the background on his version. The Chromatics decided to use synths as one of the main instruments. It’s the first sound you hear when you play the record and it’s wonderful. It takes you to another level. The most beautiful thing about this cover version of “I’m On Fire” is the lead singers voice. It hovers on top of the track and gently rubs the listeners ears. Perhaps this song pushes more emotions when a female vocalist is singing it. Maybe a female singing it gives the song an entire new meaning, maybe it’s a less creepy meaning. Maybe it’s more sweet, a little more innocent. Now it might be a song about one girl relating to another girl. It’s no longer a “bad boy” song. Regardless, of the new emotions this version brings, the singers voice is absolutely stunning and drives this cover song. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
